Preparing for Our Southern Adventure
Packing for a weekend getaway to the Algarve creates that familiar little bit of excitement mixed with uncertainty. Standing between my suitcase and Nora’s tiny wardrobe, I found myself carefully selecting clothing that would work for both evening strolls and summer day activities. The warmer climate down south meant swimsuits and shorts were essential, but there’s always that doubt about what to bring when the weather sits somewhere between seasons. Swim shirts for beach protection, comfortable outfits for the spa, and versatile pieces for pool time – everything needed to fit into our compact luggage while ensuring we’d stay comfortable whether it felt fresh or fully tropical.
The hotel selection process proved surprisingly straightforward once we started our research. What made us choose this particular resort was the perfect combination of amenities that caught our attention – a gym for morning workouts, spa facilities for relaxation, and those great reviews from previous guests. Basically, after reading through many testimonials and seeing a lot of families raving about their experiences, we had enough convincing evidence that this was the right choice for our family adventure.
As Josine was saying earlier, we’re now cruising down to southern Portugal, heading to the resort in Alida called Reale Santaia. This week’s journey represents exactly why we love being a semi-nomadic international family – half the year we’re traveling internationally, the other half we’re exploring our home base here in Portugal. We’re super stoked to explore all the kid-friendly amenities this place offers, planning to chill by the pool, hang out on the beach, and discover what makes this destination special. Whether this is your first time on our channel or you’ve been following our adventures, stick with us through this episode as we get this show on the road and check out what southern Portugal has to offer – let’s go!
Seamless Arrival and Thoughtful Accommodations
Joyine was getting us checked into the room while Nora and I headed out to explore the bar area – a smart strategy that kept our little one entertained during what could have been a tedious process. The check in proved to be a complete breeze, just what you would expect from a hotel of this caliber. All of the staff spoke perfect English and gave us a warm welcome that immediately made us feel at home. We had been assigned a spacious room with a large bathroom featuring all the essential amenities there, plus a little coffee corner stocked with coffee, tea, water, and even fresh apples – those thoughtful touches that distinguish exceptional hospitality.
Our room featured a king-size bed, and the crib was already set up next to it just as we had requested during booking. But the absolute highlight of this room is the balcony – it’s really spacious, has an incredible ocean view, and it’s simply beautiful. Right away, we checked out the vista and knew this would be where we’d spend our mornings sipping coffee and evenings watching the sunset. The attention to detail throughout the space, combined with the perfect positioning overlooking the water, created exactly the warm atmosphere we were hoping for during our weekend getaway.
3 Family-Friendly Amenities
- Kids’ Pool Area with Safety Features – The resort offers a dedicated children’s pool with shallow water depths and safety railings, allowing parents to relax while their little ones splash around in a secure environment designed specifically for young swimmers.
- On-Site Childcare and Activity Programs – Professional staff organize age-appropriate activities throughout the day, including arts and crafts sessions, treasure hunts, and educational games that keep children entertained while giving parents some well-deserved downtime.
- Family Dining Options with Children’s Menus – Multiple restaurants feature specially designed kids’ menus with healthy, familiar options, plus high chairs and booster seats readily available, making mealtime stress-free for families with children of all ages.
3 Tips for Seamless Arrival and Thoughtful Accommodations
Tip 1: Divide and Conquer During Check-In Split up arrival duties when traveling with young children. While one parent handles the check in process at reception, the other can keep kids entertained by exploring the bar area or lobby amenities. This strategy prevents restless children from disrupting the registration process and makes the entire arrival experience more breeze-like for everyone involved.
Tip 2: Communicate Special Needs in Advance Always inform the hotel about specific requirements when booking, such as crib setup or room preferences. Quality establishments of this caliber will have everything already set up upon arrival, eliminating the hassle of requesting items after check-in. This attention to detail ensures your spacious room meets your family’s needs from the moment you walk in.
Tip 3: Maximize Your Room’s Unique Features Take time to check out and appreciate special room elements like a balcony with ocean view or thoughtful touches such as fresh apples in the coffee corner. These details often become the absolute highlight of your stay and provide perfect spaces for family bonding – whether it’s morning coffee on the balcony or evening conversations while enjoying the beautiful vista.
Entertainment and Scenic Views Combined
Our first evening brought us to discover what makes this place really special beyond the standard accommodations. We just wandered around for a bit after settling in, then went to check out the game room where there’s a couple of entertainment options that caught our attention immediately. The recreation area features billiards like a professional pool table, air hockey for competitive family fun, and some really cool pinball games that transport you back to childhood memories. It’s actually pretty awesome how they’ve designed this reception area to serve multiple purposes, creating a space where families can gather and play together while parents enjoy a drink from the nearby bar.
The balcony there was this beautiful vantage point that overlooked the entire property, and you had an amazing view of the beach stretching endlessly along the coastline. Since we visited just before sunset, the golden light transformed the scenery into something magical. After exploring the entertainment options, we decided to have dinner at the hotel’s restaurant Atlantico, where the terrace seating allowed us to continue enjoying those spectacular ocean views while sampling the local cuisine. The seamless flow from recreational activities to fine dining, all while maintaining that connection to the stunning natural surroundings, showcased exactly why this resort excels at creating memorable family experiences.
3 Family-Friendly Amenities: Entertainment and Scenic Views Combined
Amenity 1: Multi-Purpose Game Room with Ocean Views The recreation area serves as the perfect family gathering spot, featuring billiards with a professional pool table, competitive air hockey, and nostalgic pinball games that appeal to all ages. What makes this space really special is how it’s actually designed as part of the reception area, allowing parents to enjoy drinks from the nearby bar while kids play. The room overlooks the entire property, so families can stay connected while everyone enjoys their preferred activities.
Amenity 2: Panoramic Balcony Experience The balcony offers this beautiful elevated perspective that provides an amazing view of the beach and surrounding coastline. Families can just wander around for a bit during different times of day to witness how the scenery transforms from morning light to golden sunset. You had the perfect vantage point to watch children play on the sand below while adults relax in comfortable seating, making it an ideal spot for multi-generational enjoyment.
Amenity 3: Integrated Dining and Entertainment Complex Our first evening dinner at the hotel’s restaurant Atlantico demonstrated how seamlessly the resort combines fine dining with family entertainment. Since we visited just before the evening rush, we could check out both the games and restaurant area without feeling rushed. There’s a couple of really cool features here – there was easy access between the dining terrace and game room, so parents went back and forth while children stayed entertained. It’s pretty awesome how this integrated design keeps families together while accommodating different interests and energy levels.
3 Tips for Family-Friendly Entertainment and Scenic Views
Tip 1: Time Your Activities Around Natural Light Changes Since lighting dramatically affects both the view and atmosphere, plan your balcony time strategically. We visited just before sunset and discovered this beautiful transformation as the entire property became bathed in golden light. Start with games in the recreation area during midday, then went to check out the amazing view of the beach as evening approaches. You had an opportunity to experience multiple moods of the same space simply by timing your visits correctly.
Tip 2: Use the Multi-Level Layout to Your Advantage The game room and balcony that overlooked the beach create perfect supervision opportunities for families. Parents can enjoy drinks at the reception area while keeping a clear sightline to children playing billiards, air hockey, or pinball games. We just wandered around for a bit between levels, allowing everyone to find their comfort zone. There’s a couple of vantage points where you can monitor multiple activity zones simultaneously.
Tip 3: Combine Dining with Entertainment for Seamless Family Time Plan dinner at the hotel’s restaurant Atlantico strategically around game time to maximize family bonding. Our first evening taught us that it’s actually pretty awesome to check out the pool table and other really cool activities before settling into the dining area. Since there was easy flow between spaces, children could alternate between eating and playing while adults enjoyed the beautiful scenery. So instead of forcing everyone into rigid schedules, we created a relaxed rhythm that accommodated everyone’s needs.
Exceptional Dining Experiences Throughout Your Stay
The next morning we were refreshed and ready for another beautiful day at the resort, so we made our way down to the breakfast buffet. To my surprise, they had all my favorites – fluffy pancakes with every spread you can imagine, yogurt bowls topped with superfood grains and fresh fruit, warm breads, buttery croissants, a selection of cheeses and meat, and yes, even pistachut. It was super delicious, oh and there are mimosas but as I’m pregnant I had to skip those unfortunately. After breakfast, we felt completely satisfied and energized for the adventures ahead.
We also heard that they’re opening a pizzeria at this hotel this summer, so there’s something to look forward to for future visits. The restaurant is located right by the beach, so the view is stunning from every angle. Even though it was still a little too chilly to sit outside during high season, the terrace looked incredible and we can only imagine how magical it must be to enjoy dinner out there while watching the sunset. Inside, it has a cozy nautical vibe that perfectly complements the oceanfront location.
The menu was fantastic, especially if you love fresh seafood – you can even choose your fish straight from the counter for the ultimate freshness guarantee. The service was just excellent, and our food arrived quickly despite the busy evening crowd. We ordered mocktails that were super refreshing, Eric ordered the classic Portuguese steak with fries and salad, and I had seafood pasta that showcased the local catch perfectly. Nora got fish fingers from her own kids menu, which also doubled as a coloring page complete with crayons – a thoughtful touch that kept her entertained throughout the meal.
After dinner we headed back to our room and called it a night, feeling completely satisfied with both the food and the entire dining experience. We slept like rocks on the king-size bed that is incredibly comfortable, knowing we’d discovered a dining destination that truly caters to families while maintaining sophisticated culinary standards. The seamless blend of family-friendly features and gourmet cuisine made every meal feel special, whether we were starting the day with an elaborate breakfast buffet or ending it with a romantic dinner overlooking the ocean.
Multi-Level Aquatic Paradise for All Ages
After breakfast, while Josine was handling some logistics, Norah and I headed back to the room to change into our swim outfits while Eric made his way to the gym to get his workout in. There’s also an indoor pool at the hotel, but little ones are not allowed there, so we skipped it instead – a disappointing restriction for families traveling with young children. We went straight to the outdoor pool area and it did not disappoint – there are three outdoor pools in total, two for older kids and adults and one specifically for toddlers and babies. The little one’s pool is just 30 cm deep, so that’s about a foot, so it’s perfect and safe for splashing and play.
The whole area is surrounded by plenty of comfy lounge beds, plus tables and chairs in front of the bar if you prefer to sit and relax in the shade. There’s also an outdoor shower nearby and, of course, a bar where you can grab your favorite drinks while keeping a watchful eye on the children. All right, so this thoughtful layout allows parents to maintain supervision while enjoying refreshments, creating the ideal balance between relaxation and responsible childcare. The multi-pool design ensures that every family member finds their perfect aquatic experience, whether it’s serious swimming, gentle wading, or supervised toddler adventures.
World-Class Wellness Facilities for Every Fitness Level
After my workout went and freshened up a bit, and then I joined Nora and Josine over at the pool where we hung out there for a bit before exploring more amenities. And then we went over to the Rialito area, but not before I had discovered something remarkable about this place – it has a pretty amazing gym that exceeded all expectations. I was actually surprised they have all the equipment I need plus more, creating a fitness experience that rivals dedicated health clubs. They even have like a little Pilates room with like the exercise balls and floor space, which is located right next to the indoor pool, so that was a pretty cool view to have while you work out.
And there’s also a spa there – like this hotel is known for their spa reputation throughout the region. It looks absolutely incredible with facilities that rival luxury destination spas. They have over 17 different treatment rooms, they have a colossal therapy circuit, a bunch of different massage rooms, and just a bunch of different treatments to choose from. So if you want to come here and be healthy, whether that’s doing a workout or checking out the pool or getting a massage, they have you covered here with options for every wellness preference.
And just be aware that for children, they have to be at least 3 years old to enter the indoor pool, but if you have children younger than that, just hit up the pools outdoors instead. So all right, so this creates a perfect balance where adults can enjoy premium wellness facilities while families have alternative options that work for every age group. Nora went to check out the outdoor pool while I went and checked out the gym and got my workout in, demonstrating how this resort accommodates different family members’ interests simultaneously.
3 Family-Friendly Amenities: World-Class Wellness Facilities for Every Fitness Level
Amenity 1: Multi-Generational Pool Access with Age-Appropriate Zones They have you covered here when it comes to aquatic facilities for every family member. The indoor pool is located right next to the gym, creating a pretty cool view to have while you work out. However, be aware that for children, they have to be at least 3 years old to enter the indoor pool. But if you have children younger than that, just hit up the pools outdoors where Nora went to check out the facilities designed specifically for toddlers and babies.
Amenity 2: Comprehensive Fitness Center with Specialized Exercise Spaces This place has a pretty amazing gym – I was actually surprised they have all the equipment I need plus more. They even have like a little Pilates room with like the exercise balls and floor space, which allows parents to maintain their fitness routines while children enjoy pool activities nearby. So if you want to come here and be healthy, whether that’s doing a workout or checking out other amenities, the facility supports every fitness goal.

After my workout went and freshened up a bit, and then I joined Nora and Josine over at the pool where we hung out there for a bit. Getting a massage represents the perfect way to unwind after active family time, and then we went over to the Rialito area feeling completely refreshed. So all right, parents can indulge in world-class spa treatments while children enjoy supervised activities elsewhere in the resort.

And plus, they have a full-size playground and a ping pong table with a bunch of space for the kids to run around, creating both structured and free-play opportunities that accommodate high-energy youngsters.

And I don’t know about other resorts, but they got all kinds of like activities that are super fun and genuinely tire kids out in the best possible way.
Private Oceanfront Paradise with Urban Convenience
We are on day number three and let’s talk about location – the Grand Real Resort is in the heart of Albufa, so you’re able to just walk into town if you want and walk to the local restaurants and check out the scene there. But yeah, super easy location to get to right in the heart of Albufa – all right, this positioning creates the perfect balance between resort tranquility and urban accessibility. Just be aware like during high season the place turns into like a real party scene, so just be prepared for bachelor parties and all those kind of shenanigans. But um, other than that, I mean it’s pretty chill – I went and did a run, did a couple kilometers and it was super nice easy sidewalk to run in.
The afternoon we headed down to the beach and what makes this hotel so special is that it has direct access to Pria Ulia. Since we were visiting an offseason, it was quiet and very peaceful, but during peak season this beach really comes to life. There will be sunbeds, umbrellas, lifeguards on duty between May and October, a beach bar, tons of water sports like jet skis, banana boats, floaties, standup pedal boards and probably much, much more. The water is calm and swimmable for all ages, which makes it perfect for families.
And right on the beach there’s a seafood restaurant that also has toilets, which is always a plus when you’re traveling with kids. I only found out later that at the south side of this beach there is a little cliffside path that you can explore – if I’d known we would have definitely gone there for a little adventure, but we’ll save that for next time. Along the same strip as the hotel’s Atlantico restaurant, you will find an ice cream shop – it looked absolutely delicious and perfect for a sweet treat after the beach, but unfortunately it was closed when I passed by.
And on the other side of this strip there’s a spot called L Club, a beach club that seems like a fun option if you’re in the mood for a lively evening vibe. Other than that, if you just want to hang out at the resort, they got you covered – they got their basically their own beach and all the activities to keep you busy. The combination of private resort amenities with easy access to local entertainment creates an ideal vacation environment where families can choose their preferred level of activity and social interaction.
Farewell to Paradise
Monday morning it is a beautiful sunny morning over here in Albufa – we’re just enjoying our morning espressos before we head out and drive back to Lisbon, savoring those final moments of resort tranquility. Just getting the room packed up, still a little bit messy but we’re getting there as families do when trying to organize vacation belongings after an incredible weekend getaway. Norah is like already in her stroller ready to go – come on Nora, she’s ready for nap time which makes the departure process smoother for everyone involved. Let’s go, all right – you ready to go? Yes, you ready to go Nora? High five, yeah – those final family moments before leaving a place that has provided such wonderful memories and experiences for parents and children alike.

Cuz well, it has five stars, but it has really everything for for the whole family for all ages – um, there was tons of families there with lots of kids, it was amazing. I mean, some of the highlights for me, um selfishly, the gym – they have a great gym there and an amazing spa, the swimming pool – they have a kiddie pool, they have like three different swimming pools was huge with a bar and just absolutely amazing. Kids were running around everywhere, so Nora had a blast – yeah, it was a good time for me. Another highlight is the breakfast – there was so much to choose from, and uh, I really like an extensive breakfast with all the goodies that I can choose from. And this breakfast, I would say, I would almost say this is the best breakfast ever.
