Rio de Janeiro, Brazil is one of my all-time favorite cities I’ve ever visited. I recently returned from this amazing trip. Now I want to show you why the absolute location of Rio de Janeiro Brazil matters so much. Rio sits on Brazil’s southeast coast. Here’s what makes it special.

During my visit, I met guys like Samuel who shared the same view. We all agreed that Rio ranks in our top five favorite places. The city sits at 22.9° South and 43.2° West. It lies between the Atlantic Ocean and tall mountains. This spot creates Rio’s famous look.

Rio de Janeiro isn’t just any city. Its location shaped its culture and beauty. The coastal spot gives it perfect weather. The mountains create stunning views. Ocean breezes keep it cool. This mix makes Rio stand out from other cities. My time there showed me why millions of people visit each year. The location alone makes it worth the trip.

Stunning Coastlines and Towering Peaks

When I visited Rio, it became clear why this city is home to such massive appeal among travelers worldwide. My buddy Kyle Huber invited me to come experience Rio’s carnival, and American Airlines hooked us up with business class seats that felt like pure luxury. The freaking experience was filling me with excitement like a kid again as we took the 10-hour flight from Dallas to South Paulo, then got on a connecting flight to Rio de Janeiro. Flying in, I couldn’t believe the landscape – those granite mountains rising from the coast created an absolutely breathtaking view that showcased the city’s amazing culture even before we landed.

The moment we took that short drive over to our hotel and got all ready to experience Rio, I understood why this first location had handed over my heart completely. Those beautiful beaches stretch endlessly along the coast, while massive mountains frame the city in the most dramatic way possible. The contrast between ocean and peaks creates something senior travelers and young adventurers alike find irresistible – it’s a place where natural beauty meets urban energy in perfect harmony.

Christ The Redeemer

The Iconic Monument Experience

The Christ the Redeemer statue stands as one of Rio’s most famous symbols that you can see from all parts of the city. This conic masterpiece took nine years to build and was finished in 1931, standing over one hundred and twenty five feet tall located on top of Corcovado mountain. When I was there, I couldn’t believe how big it was – I mean it was freaking huge! To get up there, you can take a train or take a tour van up there. When we were there, there was no spots on the train, so we took a tour vent up to the top.

We got up there and it costs us 47 Brazilian reals to get in, which is like 10 dollars a person. We took up some escalators and made it to the statue. Not gonna lie, when I was there I was overwhelmed by how packed it was – there was just so many people with everyone trying to get a picture in front of the statue. We did go a little late in the day during Carnival season, which is like when there’s the most people on your rail. Maybe that’s the reason why it was so packed, but if you do go, I definitely recommend going right when it opens in the morning or maybe try going later in the day – hopefully there won’t be as much people.

Anyways, when you’re at the statute, you’re gonna get a beautiful view of Rio – I mean it’s just such a beautiful city from above. I had a good time getting some 360 shots of my GoPro to get a really unique perspective of the statue. One thing that I thought was pretty cool is there’s actually a little church on the back side of the statue where you can go worship. While we were up there, we ran into like the cutest monkey ever – I think it’s called a common marmoset (hope I said that right). It looked like a mixture of a monkey and a raccoon – it was just such a cool animal. Anyways, the whole statue was just such a cool experience and it’s definitely a must while visiting Rio. Alright, so after we waited until exploring the christ the redeemer, our adventure continued.

Carnival

The Ultimate Night Experience in Rio

Rio’s carnival happens every year before Lent and Rios has the biggest carnival in the world – I mean there’s just millions of people that get involved in this incredible celebration. American Airlines got us an amazing lounge with a prime view to watch the madness when we got there around 9:00 p.m. The parade’s did started about 10:00, so I made sure to load up on Red Bull because it was gonna be a long night – I drink about four of them. Anyways, when the parade started I’ve never felt more energy from a crowd in my life – like it was just such a surreal feeling with everyone seeing the song and just dancing non-stop.

There was just so much power from the crowd that it’s just hard to explain – all the floats were so intricate and beautiful that I just constantly wondered how in the world these people could make them. I mean they must prepare like all year long for this one night! I couldn’t believe how many people were involved – it was an endless sea of people, flow after flow, they just keep coming and it went all night long until sunset the next day. Around 3:00 a.m. I got was getting pretty tired and decided to call it because we were gonna have to film the sunrise the next morning, so we headed back to the hotel.

It was just crazy to see everyone in the streets after the madness – I’d have to say carnival was one of them but the craziest things I’ve ever experienced in my life. Everyone should go to Rio at least once to witness it – I mean it’s just the coolest thing ever and I can’t think American Airlines enough for inviting us to go and it’s just so cool. So the next night time to experience the most crazy party in the world is something that will stay with you forever.

Pro Tip

Arrive Early or Go Late – Visit either right when venues open in the morning or later in the evening to avoid peak crowd times. Book premium viewing areas through sponsors like airlines for better access and comfort, and fuel up with energy drinks if you plan to stay for the full night-long celebration that runs until sunrise.

Mural

World’s Largest Street Art Masterpiece

One day we headed over to the largest graffiti in the world – this incredible mural is located near the plaza Malwa where artist Eduardo Cobra made the mural for the 2016 Olympics. Now the mural is over 3,000 square meters and it depicts individuals from all of the world from like Ethiopia, Brazil, Thailand, Papua New Guinea and European countries. Eduardo wanted to show that we are all one with this mural, so I thought that was a really cool message – it was just a really cool spot where there was just so much action going on.

During my visit, everyone’s just walking in the streets in their Carnaval outfits, which created such a vibrant atmosphere around this massive artwork. My meeting with Kyle led us to create a fun stop-motion video against the Morrell (so that was really fun to make). I would definitely give it a visit if you’re in Brazil because the scale and artistic detail are truly breathtaking. After exploring the murals, we’re gonna head over to one of Rio’s other amazing attractions.

The sheer size of this mural makes it impossible to capture in a single photo, and standing before it gives you a real sense of how art can bring people together from different cultures. Eduardo Cobra’s vision of unity through diversity comes alive in every brushstroke, making it not just street art but a powerful statement about our shared humanity. The myrtle colors and intricate details showcase why this particular piece has gained international recognition as more than just graffiti – it’s a cultural landmark that represents Brazil’s welcoming spirit to the world.

Bring Video Equipment for Creative Content – Follow the example of visitors like Kyle who created stop-motion videos against the mural. The massive scale and colorful backdrop make it perfect for creative photography and videography. Visit during different times of day to capture varying lighting conditions, and consider bringing a wide-angle lens or drone (if permitted) to capture the full scope of Eduardo Cobra’s masterpiece.

Copacabana Beach

The World’s Most Iconic Coastline

Before visiting Brazil, this is what I imagined when I thought of Rio – this massive Beach that has this incredible view of the two relative mountains which I think is just like the coolest mountains ever. I mean the beach is full of energy – it’s a wonderful place for surfing since they have great waves there. I was able to get some awesome 360 shots with my GoPro Max and had a good time just walking along the water and seeing everyone enjoying the Sun. When I was there, it was the day after Carnival, so there was a post carnival block party with everyone’s getting crazy in the streets.

But I will say if you do go, just be cautious with your stuff – the beach is infamous for theft, so make sure you just don’t leave your stuff unattended. Anyways, Panama was just a really cool vibe and I wish I could have stayed there longer – definitely give it a visit if you’re in Brazil. Alright, so for our last spot we were to visit one of Brazil’s the most beautiful lookouts that offers a bit of perspective on why this beach ranks among the most famous spots worldwide.

The eponym nature of this beach makes it clear why millions flock here now – it perfectly captures everything you’d expect from Rio’s coastal paradise. Whether you’re capturing those perfect shots or simply soaking in the atmosphere, Copacabana Beach delivers an experience that lives up to its global reputation as one of the world’s premier coastal destinations.

Perfect for Water Activities – Copacabana has great waves for surfing and provides wonderful opportunities for water sports, plus the long stretch of sand is ideal for walking along the water while enjoying the sun.

Vibrant Energy and Culture – The beach is full of energy with everyone enjoying themselves, and you might even experience post-carnival block parties where people get crazy in the streets, creating an authentic Brazilian atmosphere.

Cons

High Theft Risk – The beach is infamous for theft, requiring constant vigilance with your belongings and making it stressful to fully relax without worrying about your stuff being stolen.

Overcrowding During Peak Times – Especially during carnival season and major events, the massive beach can become extremely crowded, making it difficult to find a peaceful spot to enjoy the sun.

Pro Tip

Secure Your Belongings and Bring Action Cameras – Never leave your stuff unattended – always have someone watch your belongings or use a waterproof bag. Bring a GoPro Max or similar action camera to capture awesome 360 shots of the incredible mountain views and beach scenes. Visit early morning for fewer crowds and better lighting, but be extra cautious during post-carnival periods when the streets get particularly crazy with celebrations.

Dona Marta Lookout

The Perfect Sunrise Viewpoint Experience

We were only in Rio for three days, so it wasn’t a long time, and before I left I really wanted to get a sunrise over the famous Sugarloaf Mountain. On our last day we woke up at 4 a.m. and drove up to this lookout spot to capture the sunrise – we got there about thirty minutes before the Sun came up. I was able to get my camera already because I wanted to get a time-lapse of the sunrise over the Sugarloaf. Over the mountain the Sun rose up and I got one of my all-time favorite time lapses as the Sun peeked between and fell right above the Sugarloaf Mountain.

From the lookout you can also see the Christ the Redeemer statue – I was able to get some really cool 360 shots and I also did a classic backflip up top there. If you do plan to visit, just for safety reasons I recommend going a little later – when we went we did have three security guards to make sure everything was safe, so that was comforting. This lookout was just the coolest place and it was a perfect way to end the trip – I couldn’t have asked for a better sunrise.

Well, that is it for my Rio de Janeiro video – American Airlines really went the extra mile and made it one of the most mellow trips of my life. Now I just want to go back and see more of the city – here are a few more places that I wasn’t able to visit but I definitely recommend visiting. One is the phaedra, the agave Mountain – it’s this massive granite rocket over 844 meters high, making it one of the real biggest cliffs that descends into the ocean. It has to be one of the best views of Rio because you’re able to see the two brothers, the Sugarloaf mount, also the Christ the Redeemer – so it’s just an amazing spot. I do hear it is a brutal hike, so get ready for that. Another thing I wish I would have done is I wish I were – I took in a cable car up to Sugarloaf Mountain. I also wish I would have went paragliding, but I guess I just need to come back and do that. I hope you guys enjoyed that video – Rio de Janeiro has a special place in my heart and it couldn’t be more grateful that I could experience the carnival. Early Morning Commitment Required – You need to wake up at 4 a.m. and drive up in the dark to capture the sunrise, which can be challenging especially if you only have a few days in Rio and want to maximize your sleep.

Safety Concerns – For safety reasons, it’s recommended to go with security guards or visit a little later when it’s safer, as the early morning hours can pose security risks for tourists carrying expensive camera equipment.

Pro Tip

Arrive 30 Minutes Before Sunrise with Backup Safety – Get there about thirty minutes before the sun comes up to set up your camera already and prepare for the perfect shot. If you do plan to visit for safety reasons, I recommend going with three security guards or joining a organized tour group to make sure everything is safe and comforting. Bring a good camera for time-lapse photography and consider doing a classic backflip up top for unique action shots, but prioritize safety over getting the perfect shot.
