Costa Rica has two distinct seasons that determine when you should visit. From Aug-Oct, we experienced the wet season with the highest rainfall across the country. During our surfing trip, these months brought perfect surf conditions with storms creating giant swells. It was an ideal time for surfers, plus accommodation prices were significantly lower during this off season.
The shoulder months of May-July and Nov offer a sweet spot. While rain is still plentiful, it’s not as heavy as the wet months. You’ll get the biggest bang for your buck during this time. We’ve met travelers who prefer these months for balanced weather and fewer crowds.
When the dry season arrives from Dec-April, it’s peak season in the tropics. Though it’s less wet, you’ll still see occasional showers. Prices are more expensive, especially during holidays. Popular spots fill up fast, so you’ll need to book in advance. Many hotels enforce two or three day minimum stays. Beach towns overflow with domestic tourists as Costa Ricans enjoy their summer.
On our first trip in January, we balanced our schedule between the mountains and Pacific coast. While the jungle was slightly damper, it didn’t affect our activities. The beach was perfectly hot during our week there, with no rain to interrupt our coastal adventures.
